At 16 Arno was playing rugby like most boys do in school, yet he was seeking a deeper and greater challenge. A challenge where he did not need to rely on others but rather rely on himself. This made it perfect to start playing a individual sport like golf.

" My first ever Round was played at Boschenmeer Golf course the middle 9 holes to be exact. One of my most memorable golfing days. Having never played before and getting top notch tips from my 18 Handicap friend, I managed to hit my drive on the 9th tee straight down the fairway 250 meter with an old Golden bear driver. One of my fondest memories and that one shot that kept bringing me back!"

He grew up in Groblersdal where his father was not only the greenkeeper of a golf club but the captain as well. This is where Arno quietly lived in the world of golf following his father whenever he would play - catching tips and tricks with the eye until he finally picked up a club and tried the sport for himself.

" Whenever he (dad) went out to play, I would hang on to his bag on his pull trolley and go around the course with him. I also remember all the trophies he had with all the golf figures. Which when I started it came to me very easy having watched my dad for many years."

After his love for the game began he joined the PGA of South Africa and became a professional golf instructor at the age of 19 and has been working in the golf industry since then. Not only as a PGA Professional Coach but as a greenkeeper, manager and golf director with this he does know more about golf than just the game and the swing!

When he first arrived he was quite shocked with the condition of the driving range. This gave him a clear indication that the range has not been managed for a few years.

The range was uneven with a big dip right before the back tee, the grass was mostly dead, there was no specific place for members to hit making the place look untidy and not looked after , there was also no safety netting or precautions or even a parking area.

The biggest and first step in restoring the range was to improve the dead grass areas to regain grass growth as well as level out the ground from where people could swing from.

With better grass conditions there will be more spaces and bays open for people to use than before and this will also create a more pleasant experience.

After identifying the first problem, Arno began to cut off all the old sods to level the uneven areas.

After the area was completely leveled from the heaps of sand brought in with the wheelbarrow, grass was cut out of the range and repacked on the new teeing area as well as where needed otherwise.

This ,as suspected, tripled the amount of hitting space on the range as well allowed Arno to have grass tees all year round!

Arno was still however not satisfied with the improvement. Although the grass was now recovering and there where bays placed to indicate where one could hit from he still felt like another change was needed

Due to the range being quite a while from the club house he decided a chipping and putting green was needed at the range!

The only problem was that the range was enclosed in rather tall and dense bushes', limiting the needed space.

He thought the best place may be beside the back tee box of the range as indicated with the red circle left.
With this he removed 20 meters of the bush to create a open space where he could build a putting and chipping green.
With the green completed paired with a small bunker the second phase was now complete!!

The latest and newest change to the range - Arno has made contact with a construction company to retrieve sand needed to build landing zones around our different markers.

These zones provides a better visual when hitting to the demarcated colors and you can also test your accuracy .
